Nurturing Talent
At Betterhope Sports Club, youth development is at the core of our mission. We believe in providing young athletes with the coaching, mentorship, and competitive opportunities they need to reach their full potential.
Our youth programs span multiple sports, with structured pathways in cricket through the Under-16 and Under-19 levels. Young players benefit from the guidance of experienced senior members, gaining not just athletic skills but also discipline, teamwork, and confidence that serve them throughout their lives.
BHSC has a proud tradition of producing talented cricketers who go on to represent their region. Our commitment to grassroots development ensures that the next generation of sporting talent from Better Hope is ready to compete at the highest levels.
Structured cricket development through East Coast Cricket Board competitions and GCB Inter County selections, providing a clear pathway from village cricket to regional representation.
Experienced members like Suresh Budhu and Clive Rampersaud dedicate their time to guiding young players, sharing decades of cricketing knowledge and life skills.
Beyond cricket, youth can participate in football, basketball, table tennis, and volleyball, ensuring every young person finds a sport they are passionate about.

A Tradition Reborn
Once the pride of the community, the Better Hope Games were a weekend-long festive celebration of sporting competition and village togetherness.
The grounds would overflow with villagers competing for prizes across multiple sporting disciplines. Sweetie booths, toy booths, and food booths turned the event into a vibrant community festival that brought together families from across the East Coast.
Under the new Interim Management Committee, there are active plans to revive the Better Hope Games, reimagining this beloved tradition for a new generation while preserving the spirit of friendly competition and community celebration that made it so special.
Our Roots
A village rich in history, culture, and community spirit on the East Coast of Demerara, Guyana.
Better Hope village, located on the East Coast of Demerara in the Demerara-Mahaica region, traces its origins to the Dutch colonial era when it was known as Plantation Betterhoop. Situated between La Bonne Intention (LBI) and Lusignan, near Plaisance and Vryheid's Lust, the village has grown into a thriving community of over 3,000 residents.
The village is predominantly of East Indian heritage and is steeped in Hindu culture. Historically a fishing village with sugar estate workers, Better Hope has been described as a beacon of togetherness, where community bonds run deep and traditions are passed from generation to generation.
The Barefoot King | Champion Athlete
One of Better Hope's most celebrated sons, Moses Dwarka earned the title "Barefoot King" for his remarkable athletic achievements. He won three gold medals in the Half-Marathon at the British West Indies Championships between 1959 and 1965, along with two bronze medals in the 10,000m. He went on to compete at the Commonwealth Games and Pan American Championships, putting Better Hope on the international sporting map. In 2018, the village honoured his legacy by naming a street "Moses Dwarka Drive."
Investing in Our Future
Major investments are transforming sporting facilities across Better Hope and the surrounding NDC area.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, under Minister Charles Ramson Jr., has earmarked significant funding for sports ground upgrades across the country. In the Better Hope/LBI Neighbourhood Democratic Council area, 10 community centre grounds are being improved with modern amenities.
Floodlights for evening training and matches.
Modern sanitary facilities for players and spectators.
Proper boundary fencing for safety and security.
Renovated pavilion with improved seating and amenities.
